NSK welcomes visitors to the Flying Car Technology Expo

Source: FAG bearings  Tags: News

Demonstration of NSK technology for drones and flying cars . NSK Ltd. will participate for the first time in the Flying Car Technology Expo to be held at the Tokyo Big Sight from November 4 to 6, 2020.

The pace of rapid development is increasing, and people expect large-scale commercialization of flying cars as an alternative means of transportation to reduce traffic congestion in urban areas and facilitate access to mountainous areas and remote islands. In aerial photography and surveillance, light cargo transportation, agriculture, disaster relief and hobby applications, the demand for drones is also expected to increase.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) established a Public-Private Partnership Committee to promote the air traffic revolution and to promote the development of flying cars in India in Japan. The company has been developing prototypes based on the roadmap proposed by the council, which emphasizes the safety and reliability of the aircraft, while also having a quieter and longer-range combat capability .

NSK developed the "motor hub with variable pitch propeller mechanism", which supports the rotation of the propeller and adjusts the inclination of the blades to change the direction of propulsion and lift. Because of its role in these important functions, the motor hub is one of the most important components of a flying car. Of course, the motor hub with variable pitch propeller mechanism uses bearings and ball screws made by NSK .

At the NSK booth, a complete motor hub assembly was on display, which was successfully flight tested last year. The unit has a cutaway view, so you can check the internal structure in detail. In addition, NSK will also exhibit motor bearings suitable for drones and bearings used in rotating mechanisms for adjusting the angle of drone cameras.

NSK began its journey to manufacture the first bearings in Japan in 1916, and has since developed into a global organization that researches, designs and manufactures Motion&Control? solutions that are essential for mobility and industrial applications, usually leading packaging with new products and innovations. NSK will use our strengths in the four core technologies of tribology, materials, numerical simulation, mechatronics and manufacturing engineering to continue to contribute to the development of new modes of travel, such as flying cars.

Main exhibits

1. Motor hub with variable pitch propeller mechanism

The prototype motor hub is made of NSK's high-quality angular contact ball bearings, thrust needle roller bearings, ball screws and other NSK products.
The device supports the rotation of the propeller and adjusts the inclination of the blades to quickly change the direction of the propulsion force.
Propulsion and lift can be controlled freely, allowing you to fly in any direction as needed.

2. High reliability bearings

NSK offers a wide range of products, such as sealed bearings to prevent water ingress in rainy weather and proprietary stainless steel bearings with strong anti-rust properties. NSK products provide the reliability required for use in all weather conditions. NSK also develops and sells high-speed rotating bearings with small size, light weight and low friction. These bearings help save energy and achieve ultra-high-speed operation.
